The Shooting Stars continued to roll at the Legendary Showcase Showdown in Virginia Beach last weekend.  Again displaying their depth in showcase mode by rotating players through multiple positions and shuffling the lineup, the team had a very successful weekend by outscoring opponents 30-2.  Excellent pitching and defense kept teams from NJ to SC to just two runs over 28 innings and the Stars offense scored in bunches, all leading to another good showing in front of several more colleges coaches.

Shooting Stars go 5-2 at Team NJ Fall Showcase

October 15, 2017

The Shooting Stars showed their depth at the Team NJ Fall Showcase winning 5 of 7 games while rotating players through in showcase format (in which all games surprisingly ended with completed innings).   The Stars had a very challenging schedule with four 18u Gold/Showcase teams and two games against a great 16u team from San Diego.  Individually, players across the board performed well in front of several D1 college coaches but the Stars took pride in collectively showcasing their team-first attitude.  Over the weekend, the team outscored exceptionally good opponents by a 39-17 margin!

Stars Finish Tied for 33rd out of 127 at USA Softball Nationals

August 06, 2017

The Shooting Stars closed out the 2016-2017 season by finishing tied for 33rd out of 127 teams at USA Softball Nationals in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  The competition was excellent, as expected for a tournament where berths are earned and the Stars matched up with teams who won regional tournaments in California, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Utah, and South Dakota.  Clutch play defined the Stars week as they won four 1-run games, including three in elimination play.  In all of those wins, there were multiple lead changes and either a clutch hit, clutch pitch, or clutch play that won the game and provided life-long memories of the game they love.  The Stars had a rough draw as they pulled the eventual 3rd place team, the Santa Fe Inferno, in the 2nd round of the bracket and after being down 6-0 early, fought back to a close 8-5 loss.  Once in the losers bracket and with their backs against the wall the Stars went to work, winning three one-run games in a row before finally falling in another close game to Team Tampa.

Shooting Stars Compete at World Fastpitch Championships

July 16, 2017

The Shooting Stars proved they belong on the national softball stage after competing in the World Fastpitch Championships in Kansas City.  The Stars were able to top premier organizations from California (OC Batbusters 02) and Texas (Glory Adkins Gold) but fell short in elimination play after losing on Thursday to the Olathe Rockets.  During pool play the Stars took the Ohana Tigers 02 into ITB before falling 2-1.  Although it was not the final result the team was looking for, all questions about whether or not the Stars belong on the national scene were answered.  The coaches and players identified areas for further work in order to go deep into national tournaments such as the WFC.  Additionally, the Shooting Stars were among the most watched 14u teams, as coaches from all Power Five conferences sat down and scouted multiple games.

Shooting Stars finish 4th at Top 50 Showcase

July 01, 2017

The Shooting Stars traveled to South Bend, Indiana to play in the Top 50 Showcase against almost all of the best teams from seven Midwestern states.  The Stars were among the final four teams standing, having topped multiple teams ranked in the top 100 by Flo Softball.  In the end, the team outscored opponents 40-22 and put up a 5-2 mark. One highlight of the weekend was to play 2 games in the Notre Dame stadium, one of the most beautiful softball fields in all of college softball.

Shooting Stars win Top Recruit Mid Atlantic Showcase 16u Premier Division

June 11, 2017

The Shooting Stars played up at 16u in the Premier Division of the Mid-Atlantic Showcase and won the Championship!  The field in Premier included national-level 16u teams such as Gold Coast Hurricanes (FL) and Carolina-Elite Baker/Fusetti.  The Stars shut down a very good Carolina Elite offense in the semi final game, winning 6-1.  In the Championship game against Maryland Legends, the Stars had their backs against the wall in the 2nd inning of ITB with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out.  A diving play at SS led to a double play when the runner was doubled off third.  In the bottom of the inning, a double on the first pitch gave the Stars the Championship!

Shooting Stars Qualify for USA Softball National Championship

May 29, 2017

The Shooting Stars opened up the Summer by winning the National Qualifier tournament in Philadelphia and will now travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee to compete with teams from across the US for the USA Softball National Championship.  The Shooting Stars were one of only two teams remaining in the winners bracket when rain shortened the tournament but the Stars earned the berth to Nationals due to a better run differential.

Shooting Stars Close Out Spring 15-3-1, Winning 2 of 3 Tournaments

May 21, 2017

The Shooting Stars finished out their Spring at 15-3-1 having won two out of the three full tournaments they played and going 3-1 in partial rainouts and Sunday-only games.  The team showed its depth and versatility with the successful Spring, playing very well through several missing players and pitch limits for high schoolers.  The Stars are proud to have had so many players contributing to their varsity teams and fully supportive of those players prioritizing their high school games and practices.  Similarly, the Stars are also proud to have gotten in almost 20 games for the 8th graders, roughly the same amount as the 9th graders got on varsity teams.  All players are now ready to hit the Summer season in stride!

Shooting Stars Go 2-1 in 16u/18u One Day Tourney

May 07, 2017

The Shooting Stars were back in action for a one day tournament in Richmond on May 7th.  The Stars beat a solid 18u team that draws players from both VA and NC after breaking through a 1-1 tie with 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th.  But it was the great adjustments on defense (after going 1-1 against two 16u teams earlier in the day) that made the day a great step forward.

Fully bought into the concept that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, the team upended some of the best opponents from Georgia to New York this fall.  The Stars finished 32-10-1 facing only the most elite 14u teams and often playing up, spending 40% of their season playing at 16u and 18u. In sum, the team won 3 of their 6 tournaments and the box bracket of their only tournament without full elimination play.  One of their championships was at 18u and in the others they didnt win, the Stars finished 2nd of 38 teams, 3rd of 13 16u teams, and 13th in a tourney of 40 of the best teams in the South.

The Shooting Stars scored 311 runs this Fall, giving up only 153.  The Stars have excellent depth and their lineup is among the best in the East Coast, with a team .447 OBP and 10 players with over a .300 batting average.  It was the extra base hits that stood out over the fall as the team hit 10 home runs, 54 doubles, and boasted an elite combination of speed and power with 23 triples.  The Stars running game was solid, stealing 76 bases but more importantly it was efficient with over 90% success rate.  Facing Shooting Stars pitching this Fall proved difficult for even the best lineups as the five pitchers combined for a 1.4 WHIP, 2.1 K/BB ratio, and a .256 batting average against.  The staff combined with excellent defense to produce 9 shutouts in just 43 games.

The most important stat, however, remained the result of tireless mental training that allowed the team to have their strongest mental discipline when it mattered most, on elimination day.  The Stars went 19-6 in Championship play.

The Shooting Stars now transition into camp and clinic focus as their pursue colleges of most interest but not a single player will talk about themselves first, its all about how well they fit into their team.

ASA Eastern Elite Showcase and National Qualifier

October 30, 2016

The Shooting Stars had a good but not great weekend in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Against some very good competition from across the South, the Stars represented our area well going 4-3 with two of the losses coming by 1 and 2 runs, one to the eventual champions.  Overall the team finished 13th of 38 teams and outscored opponents 34-24 and shut out two of the better teams in the tournament.  The team showed great mental toughness, winning three elimination games in a row and walking off the field after midnight on Saturday before finally falling early Sunday morning.

In addition to recruiting videos for individual players, the Shooting Stars 2020 believe it is important to show how our players play well as a team and therefore will fit well as teammates on college rosters.  We therefore release our highlight video from our most recent tournament as additional recruiting information for our upcoming showcases and camps.

Three players from the 14u Shooting Stars made the USSSA Elite Select Mid-Atlantic Team.  Hundreds of girls tried out from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Indiana - the states that encompass the USSSA Mid-Atlantic Region.  Shooting Stars 2B/OF Makayla Gallagher, 1B/OF Lauren Halpern, and OF/P Sara Kelly were selected and will travel to Orlando, Florida during the first week in August to compete against teams from the other seven regions across the country.  The Shooting Stars are the only team with three players who made the Mid-Atlantic roster although they will be joined by a pair of players from the same team in Indiana.  The Head of the Shooting Stars program, John Oakes, said "We are proud of these great accomplishments that have come out of the organization's team-first approach to developing players who eventually enter college knowing how to win as a team and we expect these three players to take that attitude with them to Orlando in August."

USSSA's Elite Select program announced the team in a video posted to their website, which can be found here:   (the players are announced at about the 6:45 point in the show).
